U.S. / Canada TARIFFS – Firearms Facts
Current as of March 21, 2025.
Summary: some cross-border firearm shipments are impacted; many are not.
SOUTHBOUND – from Canada to the USA
NO CHANGES:
• Guns and related items made in the USA, going back to the USA.
• Guns and parts made in countries other than Canada or the USA (such as guns made in Germany, Italy, Finland, etc.).
• Most guns going from Canada to the USA are NOT impacted at all by new tariffs.
New 25% Tariff:
• ‘Made in Canada’ guns and parts that do not qualify under the USMCA / CUSMA.
→ For example, items manufactured in Canada with mostly foreign-sourced materials (very uncommon for guns).
• Possibly all ‘Made in Canada’ guns and gun parts beginning April 2nd, 2025.
Conclusion: extremely limited applicability. Very few firearms are manufactured in Canada with foreign-sourced materials, thus subject to the current U.S. tariffs. All other guns, ammo, and parts have NO CHANGES.
NORTHBOUND – from the USA to Canada
Due to Canada’s “Retaliatory Tariffs” in response to the U.S. tariffs, the following applies:
NO CHANGES:
• Guns and related items made outside the USA (e.g. made in Germany, Italy, etc.).
→ For example, NO TARIFF on a Tikka rifle made in Finland, a Beretta made in Italy, or a Mauser made in Germany, etc.
• Gun PARTS or SCOPES made in the USA.
• Guns documented as over 100 years old.
→ For example, NO TARIFF on a Parker shotgun made in 1924, or a Winchester rifle made in 1894 (over 100 years old), etc.
New 25% Tariff:
• ‘Made-in-USA’ guns and ammo less than 100-years old.
→ For example, U.S. made guns such as Ruger, Gunwerks, Henry, etc. – and U.S. made ammo such as CCI, Federal, etc.
Conclusion: limited applicability, direct impact on ‘modern’ U.S. manufactured guns & ammo. However, many other items (parts, scopes, non-US-made guns, and items over 100 years old) are NOT impacted at all.
