U.S. / Canada TARIFFS – Firearms Facts

Current as of April 29, 2025.

Summary: some cross-border firearm shipments are impacted; many are not.

SOUTHBOUND – from Canada to the USA

No Changes, No Tariff:

  • U.S.-made guns and related items, going back to the USA.
  • Canada-made guns and related items that qualify under USMCA/CUSMA.

New +10% Tariff:

  • Guns and related items made in countries other than Canada or the USA (such as guns made in Germany, Italy, Finland, etc.), in addition to historic Duty rates of ~3%.

New 25% Tariff:

  • Canada-made guns and parts that do not qualify under USMCA / CUSMA.
→ For example, items manufactured in Canada with mostly foreign-sourced materials (very uncommon for guns).

Conclusion: limited applicability. U.S.-made guns are not impacted for return to USA. Very few firearms are manufactured in Canada with foreign-sourced materials, thus subject to the current 25% U.S. tariffs.

NORTHBOUND – from the USA to Canada

Due to Canada’s “Retaliatory Tariffs” in response to the U.S. tariffs, the following applies:

No Changes, No Tariff:

  • Guns and related items made outside the USA (e.g. made in Germany, Italy, etc.).
→ For example, NO TARIFF on a Tikka rifle made in Finland, a Beretta made in Italy, or a Mauser made in Germany, etc.
  • Gun PARTS or SCOPES made in the USA.
  • Guns documented as over 100 years old.
→ For example, NO TARIFF on a Parker shotgun made in 1924, or a Winchester rifle made in 1894 (over 100 years old), etc.

New 25% Tariff:

  • ‘Made-in-USA’ guns and ammo less than 100-years old.
→ For example, U.S. made guns such as Ruger, Gunwerks, Henry, etc. – and U.S. made ammo such as CCI, Federal, etc.

Conclusion: limited applicability, direct impact on ‘modern’ U.S. manufactured guns & ammo. However, many other items (parts, scopes, non-US-made guns, and items over 100 years old) are NOT impacted at all.
